Government shutdown: What will it look like?

Congress missed the deadline and so the federal government is set for a partial shutdown. The federal government managed to narrowly avoid shutting down in 2011. Congress waited until the last few minutes to put a bill together that both sides could agree on.

It seems like Congress was unable to pass a funding bill that would keep the government from partially shutting down. This is the first government shutdown in 17 years. It would leave some government doors closed and hundreds of thousands of workers furloughed.

Only the most essential services would remain in place. However, it will be a minor headache for some people but a major concern for others. President Barack Obama said it would hurt women, children and seniors the most.

While no details have been released as of yet, here are a few examples of what has happened during past government shutdowns:

Federal Workers: Hundreds of thousands of federal workers would probably see their paychecks delayed. They may even be furloughed.

Air Travel: Air travel would largely be unaffected. Air traffic controllers would probably remain on the job, as would screeners.

International Travel: Visa applications might continue being processed if there’s sufficient funds. However, last time there was a government shutdown, 20-30,000 applications went unprocessed.

Benefit Payments: Social Security and Medicare benefits would keep coming, though there might be delays in processing new applications. Unemployment payments would also continue.

Federal Courts: Courts will continuing operating at full capacity for 10 days after the shutdown starts. After that, non-essential employees could get furloughed. Cases will still be heard.

Mail: Mail will continue because the U.S. Postal Service doesn’t rely on taxes for day-to-day operations.

Recreation: All national parks will likely be closed, leaving many of their employees furloughed.

Taxes: Americans will still have to pay their taxes on time, though audits will be suspended. No one at the Internal Revenue Service will be answering phones so don’t bother trying to call.

Government employees who are considered expendable could be looking for an alternative way to make money. After all, we all have to eat and have a roof over our heads.
